Titan's Smartwatch Will Not Be Geeky Looking: Managing Director

Titan's high-tech smartwatch which the company is planning to launch in the second half of the current fiscal year 2015-16, will not be a "geeky" looking watch but a "good looking" one with utilitarian features, managing director Bhaskar Bhat told NDTV.

"I don't want to call it a tech-watch because that sounds as if it's a geeky watch. But (it) certainly (will be) a good looking watch with much more utilitarian features beyond time-keeping," Mr Bhat. (Watch)

Titan did not elaborate on the features that will be made available or the price point. But Mr Bhat had earlier said that the company is inspired by Apple's smartwatch.

The watch segment for Titan has been growing around 10 per cent, Mr Bhat said. The company's product basket includes jewellery, eyewear, watches and a range of accessories like belts, bags, wallets. In the organised watches market, the company holds 60 per cent of the market share, Mr Bhat said.

Customers can expect more innovation and fresh offerings even within the existing range of watch offerings like Raga, Octane, Fastrack, Titan said.

"The role of the (watch) category itself is changing, it is becoming more and more an accessory but with technology now being available to make a watch much more functionally utilitarian with the same looks, that is the direction in which watchmakers are going and so is Titan."

At 2:34 pm the Titan Company stock was trading more than 4 per cent down at Rs 353.60, underperforming the broader Nifty and the Sensex which were up around 2 per cent.
